Tom Brindley Talks to ED2 Textiles students

Below, some beautiful drawings that Tom completed whilst studying the Foundation course here at HCA.

Whist studying at the college Tom pushed screen printing to the limits, he printed multi layered prints to produce almost 3D like images.

Tom came to HCA with a very definate path for himself in Illustration but whilst studying here and working in the Textiles workshop, he began to realise that Textiles was a specialism that offered him everything from drawing to surface design...Tom secured himself a place on BA (hons) Textile Design at Falmouth. Below are some of the weave samples he produced during his first year on the course.

Drawing and stitch samples.
 Some stunning digital prints.

Whilst studying at Falmouth, the Textiles Design course was set a live brief by 'Joules' (a high end clothing company) Tom was the winner of this live brief and will be spending a month on work placement with them in the summer.

Below, some lovley examples of Heat Transfer printing (Heat Sublimation)

I would just like to say a massive THANK YOU to Tom who gave up his own time to come and speak to our second year Textiles students and show us his amazing work...i predict BIG things for Tom in the future...so watch this space. Thanks tom

Tom North...

Tom (CAA Y2) produced this lovely piece in the Small Metals workshop last week;
He is a wizz at etching and has honed his skills to a high standard. He also used tecniques such as riveting and saw piercing and finished the piece by setting an amythest at the top right hand side. This was the first time Tom had ever attempted stone setting but I don't think it will be the last...

I just thought you might like to see what one of my AA2A people is up to. These monoprints have been created by Alan Hughes who has constructed printing plates from found objects such as old medicinal blister packs, packaging and various other items which most people would throw away without a second thought. it just goes to show how with a little latteral thinking things which would normally be regarded as refuse can be turned into really interesting fine art prints.

Looking Forward...
Last week the 3rd year (Jewellery and CAA) students put their work on display for assessment. Here are some examples of work produced in the Small Metals workshop. I think we can look forward to a strong summer show.

The images above show Amy's oversized earring backs; utilising techniques such as flocking in the 3D workshop and using an external company for gold plating. She has also begun to work in silver and the effect of these combinations is tremendous...

Gemma's beautiful pieces of Jewellery are exsquisite and show a high level of skill and finish (above)

Rob has produced a range of automata 'toys'; he has developed and painstakingly cut out a set of interlinking cogs that work like a dream. He has started working with silver for his final pieces (above).

Fran's minature jewellery (above) has been assembled using tiny screw threads that blow the mind.

Dom (above) has worked hard to produce a range of vessels that have been rolled, press-formed and etched. She has used a variety of different metals, patinas and finishes to create the end result which has a strong impact.

3D Laser Demo

Yesterday, we were visited by Dave Porter, a representative from Boxford, educational CAD/CAM suppliers.  He wowed the demo attendees, (Academic/Technical Staff and a CAA Degree student...thanks Esther:-) with the highly accurate, and impressively quick, portable laser cutter.  Our imaginations were buzzing at all the possibilities of the, seemingly simple to use, machinery...It'll cut paper, perspex, plastic, wood and will engrave glass. Dave's apparently off to the Royal College of Art next week, to give them a demo of the same model....fingers crossed for the future.
